Mona and Eric's wedding at Hotel Santa Caterina proved exactly why that works.
The nerves before the ceremony, the real tears during the vows, the quiet moments nobody thought to plan, none of it needed help from me.
I just had to be in the right place when it happened.
Mona and Eric come from Florida, and choosing Amalfi for their wedding meant traveling far from home to celebrate the life they're building together.
It takes something real to bring an entire family across an ocean for one day, and everyone who showed up for them made that clear.
Amalfi is one of the most cinematic places on earth for a reason.
The cliffs falling straight into the sea, the light changing by the hour, the terraces hanging over the water, all of it already tells a story before anyone even picks up a camera.
My job as a wedding videographer here is simply not to get in the way of it.
The Promises They Made, With Amalfi Watching
In the vows Eric and Mona exchanged in front of the sea in Amalfi, you find the whole essence of two people who already know exactly who they chose. Nothing rehearsed, nothing generic. Just their real life, said out loud.
Eric admitted something simple and honest, that he thought he had everything mapped out, and only with Mona did he realize he hadn't.
He promised to keep choosing her, to be patient, to keep building the life that only the two of them can build. Mona answered without hesitation. She said she doesn't want perfect, she wants him exactly as he is, and that she knows with complete certainty he's her person.
Then the words that stayed with me after editing the film: "I choose you exactly as you are. I choose our life. I choose our future. Today, tomorrow and always."
In those words, the certainty of two people who stopped looking a long time ago.
This is what documentary wedding cinema exists for, not to make reality look better than it was, but to preserve it exactly as it happened.
Speeches, Laughter and a Party Under the Stars
Frank took the microphone and spent the first few minutes just having fun with it, joking about beating another guest to the stage and shouting out friends from New York and Miami like he was taking attendance.
Then, almost by accident, he landed on the one word that summed up the whole night for him: "Bellissima."
From there the tone shifted.
He talked about the twenty five years he's known Eric, the different cities and different chapters they've lived through without ever really drifting apart, and an energy in Eric he described as impossible to run out.
The room laughed hardest when he brought up a wine fueled debate the two of them once had, whether a bad man who turns good stays good after he dies, and admitted they never actually settled it.
By the time the cake came out, the speeches had already done their job of loosening everyone up.
Friends pulled Eric off his feet and into the air, the dancing picked up pace, and the fireworks went off right as the cake was cut, lighting up the whole terrace above the sea.
Nothing about that part of the night was planned.
It's just what happens when the people in the room have known each other long enough to stop holding back.
